Mode of Instruction

IAU delivers courses through 3 modes of instruction.

Campus, face-to-face (F2F), in-person, or “offline” refers to the traditional classroom teaching and learning environment. Courses are taught synchronously in person, involving classroom-based activities. This traditional method may incorporate basic classroom technology and is typically used for English as a Second Language (ESL) or Pathway Programs.

The Hybrid mode of instruction combines both face-to-face instruction and online learning. This approach integrates synchronous and asynchronous learning, emphasizing in-person classroom presentations while assignments, activities, and assessments are conducted online.

The Hybrid mode does not replace traditional face-to-face instruction but rather enhances it by utilizing web technologies. IAU employs a Learning Management System (LMS), IAUonline, to support online learning alongside face-to-face instruction.

In this mode, the majority of instruction occurs in a traditional classroom where physical attendance is mandatory for successful course completion. Students must attend all scheduled class meetings. For instance, a 3-unit course requires four hours of in-person attendance per week.

In a Hybrid mode, instructors deliver lessons in person and assess coursework (assignments, quizzes, discussion questions, etc.) both offline and through IAUonline. This setup allows instructors to monitor active participation in the classroom and online.

The Classroom-Hybrid mode facilitates student engagement both in person and online. Students can interact with instructors during class and through IAUonline, allowing for questions and discussions at any time. This mode enables students to complete coursework before or after class, offering flexibility not possible with conventional face-to-face instruction. IAUonline is accessible 24/7, allowing students to submit coursework from anywhere with an Internet connection. Students are required to post discussion questions and submit assignments or exams promptly.

If students are unfamiliar with the concept of online learning, IAU offers a brief overview. IAUonline courses are highly accessible and flexible, making them ideal for gaining new skills, working towards a degree, or advancing a career with a program certificate.

Standard classroom books and printed materials are typically used alongside online lectures, assignments, and supplementary course materials. Instructors leverage computer-based technologies to transform some lecture or lab content into engaging online learning activities, such as case studies, tutorials, self-testing exercises, simulations, and online group collaborations.

To ensure student success, an assessment is conducted during the admissions process. The survey, located on the last page of the Application for Admissions, evaluates whether prospective students possess the necessary skills and competencies for an online learning environment and assesses their access to computers, software, and internet technologies. These factors are considered before admitting a prospective student into the program.

Online courses require students to be independent and highly motivated learners. Due to the Internet components of IAUonline courses, students must meet all technical requirements. For additional information regarding IAUonline courses, please speak with an academic advisor.

All online courses are accessible through IAUonline. Online students must post discussion questions and submit assignments and/or exams in their respective online courserooms.
